On 5-7 December 2008, the Wetlands International Black Sea Programme in co-operation with the South Bug Basin Organisation of the State Committee of Ukraine on Water Management and Malva" (Mallow) Public Non-Profit Environmental Children's Organisation conducted a training course “Public participation in the development of Strategic Action Plan for the basin of the South Bug River and conducting of public awareness campaign”. The training was conducted in Vinnytsa city, where the South Bug Basin organisation is located. 35 participants from 5 oblasts located in the South Bug River Basin and 8 trainers from Kyiv and Vinnytsa took part in the training course.
At the training the BBI MATRA project “Towards integrating wetland biodiversity conservation with water and agricultural management in Ukraine. A pilot project in the South Bug River Basin” were presented and Educational toolkit “Biodiversity Conservation, Econet Development and Integrated River Basin Management” were disseminated.
Trainers from Kiev and Vinnitsa carried out their presentations on the following themes:
- Problems of the South Bug River Basin management;
- Basin GIS for water management and monitoring in the SB River Basin;
- Integrated river basin management;
- Biodiversity Conservation and Econet Development;
- Problems of sustainable agriculture;
- Strategic approach to the development of the region;
- Organisation of public campaigns on the main ecological problems and carrying out of public awareness campaigns on a local level;
- Interaction with mass media;
- Preparation of inquiries to governing bodies on environmental information.
Round table “Public awareness campaign in the South Bug River Basin Planning” was also held.
The participants of the training supported the idea of public awareness campaign and made proposals on it. It was decided to send all the propositions to Wetlands International Black Sea office till 25 December. Participants had also decided to prepare methodological recommendations on conducting of the public awareness campaign and send it to the participants of the training and to other stakeholders.
Participants of the training visited the Sabarivska hydropower station and Vinnitsa Organisation of Young Environmentalists where watched the Performance of the Young Ecologists Guard from Zhmerynka town (Vinnytsa Oblast) on pollution control in their native town.
